- Malta/Day 9 -
07/07/2001
Actually started in Torture Ville, but after only a couple of
hours sleep we were up and grooving again.
"Baby's not in love" got put on the DAT, without much change from
yesterday and then we moved on to "Jerk like me". Bob sang the
chorus again and then everybody started putting voices on. The
idea was to sound like a horn section crossed with a drunken gospel
choir. It didn't work, but we had a lot of fun!!
The backing vocals feature Sven "I sing lower than Lee Marvin"
Boogie, on a rare occasion where a band let him near an open mic
and a Tom "I've forgotten my voice, but do I still get a credit?"
Ivison. You could have filmed a video about this episode, endless
retakes because Sven and Tom couldn't remember the words, which
were "jerk" and "creep" and only "jerk" and "creep", but there's
more brain cells needed for that than most rock'n'rollers have
ever owned.
And do I hear someone singing "I waved my dick" instead of "Arithmetic"??
And that beautiful "Evil" at the end makes you almost think that
the devil has all the good music, but this song is about tongue
in cheek as you can get and you know we really love women (See
the next paragraph).
Then we got the girls in to sing "Evil", Annette, Dan and Jacqui
with Deko directing and it took three takes. I think it has something
to do with the good preparation, all that washing up, cooking,
looking after our every whim, ironing our bass strings, counting
the pips in the water melon etc, etc! I'm writing this while no
one else is around, otherwise I'm dead. If anyone asks you tell
them Tom wrote this, he's young and new, he has to take the blame!
Dinner at the Palazzo Santa Rosa and a great plate of Antipasti,
wine, Sambuca and Espresso. We were served by a George Michael
lookalike! Jacqui found him really cute and there's a photo to
prove it.
"Jerk like me" is almost finished, Marc played another guitar
on it and we tried to record an "atmo" track by hanging a microphone
out of the window pointing towards the restaurant, but it didn't
work, I think everybody thought it was "karaoke"!
