- Malta/Day 5 -

03/07/2001
Up around 10:00, 8 people in the jeep, shopping for breakfast and arriving at the studio where the air-conditioning had broken down, or somebody had turned it off. The main suspects were Tom and Deko who had slept in the studio but they both denied it, so it was probably the studio ghost!! So we had to wait awhile before the control room cooled down enough to turn on the equipment. But breakfast was nice with real Maltese bread, cheese and coffee.

"Tried" proved to be one of the more difficult songs, but at the end it sounded really good and is a big departure from the normal CBATFOW sound, David put a filter on the song which makes the drum track sweep in and out and up and down adding that spherical atmosphere! The monotone vocals are framed with a beautiful chorus with the angel boys and Julia singing there guts out. If you are an old CBATFOW fan I hope you will enjoy this song, it sure is different.

We then started work on "Catastrophe". During the day everybody was going in and out of the studio, going swimming, drinking coffee, eating watermelon. The only one who was permanently on duty was Marcus, but even he took a quick swim between takes. We had a big dinner at the restaurant next door, whole band, girlfriends, kids, David and so on. Tom ate too much and soon we were telling musician jokes again. The antipasti was great, the pizza ok, spaghetti good and the wine was really cool again.

We recorded some new vocals on "Catastrophe", in particular Tom. We took the vocals at the end and put them at the front and tweaked them just a little in Logic Audio. So now the truth is out, but don't get mad at us, it was just a little fine tuning(!). The song is very classy and starts with a "wouldn't we like to be the Beach Boys" intro, before grooving into a tale of fortune and luck beyond belief. Why don't I know big time Hollywood producers, this could have been in that "Robinson Crusoe" Tom Hanks film, delivered by FedEx, but maybe for the remake!

Finished the evening watching "Spinal Tap" on video, before going back to our apartments around three in the morning.
