- Malta/Day 3 -
01/07/2001
Next morning we checked out of the hotel, we are moving into two
apartments today, ready for the other guys when they arrive on
Monday evening. We drove over to the studio and started to work.
The desk is a Neve and David managed to get it before Steve Albini,
who wanted to mix In Utero from Nivana on it! The studio is very
big and the control room and live room are air-conditioned! There's
a kitchen, a games room with pool table and a table tennis table,
a leisure area where we watch the Grand Prix on a great satellite
system, an office and upstairs a smaller studio. Marcus was using
this desk for the first time, but he was up and working pretty
quick.
David was there to lend a hand and they had "Cold Outside" done
pretty quick. After a little SMPTE problem they started on the
automatic mix. It's cool watching the flying faders going up and
down as if powered by magic hands! Vocals louder on the third
word in the first chorus - no problem, just show the desk how
you want it and he'll remember it, until you want to change it
again. Ok, we had the first mix done and went to eat.
Spaghetti with garlic, onion and chili, a bottle of Merlot, espresso
and a Maltese history lesson from David, with stories about the
crusaders, the apostle Paul and Minthoff, who freed the island
from the devilish English!
After dinner we're doing a "vocal up" mix and maybe a playback.
A pretty good first day I think. It's nearly midnight and we're
working on "News Tonight", setting it up to do the mix tomorrow.
There are two vocals from Bob, one recorded with a heavy cold
that sounds very fragile and one that was recorded shortly before
we left Germany that's harder. I think Marcus will prepare both.
I'm leaning towards the one with a cold.
We stopped around midnight and David drove us to the apartments
we had rented for the next 10 days. They look like the kind of
rooms that cockroaches like but maybe I'm being unfair. Anyway
I slept like a lamb until a friend of mine from Taiwan woke me
up with a telephone call at nine in the morning. His name is JR,
but not that JR!
